KHAMMAM: About 15 armed Maoists burnt down a JCB and a tractor at Gouraram village bordering the Chhattisgarh State around midnight on Wednesday.

They also roughed up the driver of the JCB and threatened him with dire consequences if he continued in the road-laying work.

Earlier, they went to Pydigudem sarpanch and CPM leader Midium Balaraju’s house and beat him holding him responsible for the road-laying works.

He escaped under the cover of darkness, when the Naxals were about to shoot him down. Felling of trees in the forest for laying the road sanctioned under the Prime Minister Sadak Yojana at a cost of Rs 1.6 crore has angered the Maoists, it is learnt.
The police intensified combing operations soon after the incident.
