Why WB not banning Maoists: Mamata

Published: Saturday, December 15, 2007

Kolkata, Dec 15: Under attack from the CPM which has accused her party of having links with Maoists in Nandigram, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today hit back at the Left Front government asking why it was not banning the Naxals in West Bengal if they were a threat to internal security.

"If the state government has information that Maoists are involved in terrorist activities, then why is it not banning it in West Bengal?" Mamata told a press conference.

She claimed the government was not banning Maoists and instead people were being branded as Maoists and being arrested.

"We will not take it lying down and protest against the indiscriminate arrests invoking the bogey of Maoists and seeking to justify the recapture of Nandigram" by CPM, she said.

"Who are the Maoists? It is an organisation comprising CPM dissidents. The party had good rapport with them once. How have they now become allergic to them?" she said.

Mamata said though Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf had lifted Emergency in his country, "an unofficial Emergency is in force in West Bengal to curb democratic rights."

On a Maoist poster pasted on the Secretariat wall, she alleged it was the work of the police. (Agencies)
