MALKANGIRI: Three Maoists, who were planning a major strike in Malkangiri district ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, were on Monday arrested and huge quantities of explosives seized from forests in Motu area near here, police said.

A team of Special Operation Group and police raided a Maoist camp in the forests and arrested the three ultras, SP S K Gajbhiye said.

The Maoists were identified as Salbam Mukta of Konta Naxal Dalam in Chhattisgarh, Kotam Malla and Motam Ram of Motu Naxal Dalam in Malkangiri.

Mukta, a hardcore ultra wanted in several killings, was mobilising the cadre here. The SP said live landmines, explosives, two grenades, 49 gelatin sticks, one SBML gun, I-cards, banners, Maoist literature and wires were recovered from their possession.

Gajbhiye said Mukta was the mastermind behind the assassination bid on Chhattisgarh leader Mahendra Komma last year.

“A defeated Sarpanch candidate in Chhattisgarh, he was actively involved in Naxal movement since 2001,” the SP said.
