Bhubaneswar (PTI): The Centre has asked the seven Maoist-affected states to trace Ganapati, the newly-elected supreme commander of the CPI (Maoist), official sources said.
The Centre's concern was expressed by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram at a meeting of chief ministers of the Maoist-hit states of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal held recently in New Delhi.
Ganapati, elected as the supreme commander of the 7,000-strong cadre of red rebels, had influence in all these States posing a challenge for the Centre.
Though Ganapati, considered the brain behind recent Maoist attacks by the security forces, and his team stayed for nearly seven days in Chhattishgarh, where he was elected as the supreme commander earlier this month, the police there had no knowledge of his whereabouts, officials said.
Chidambaram during his interaction on January 7 had reportedly asked the police officers to prepare a strategy to catch senior leaders of the People's Liberation Guerrila Army (PLGA).
