Chhattisgarh: Five Naxals killed in encounter

Raipur (PTI): At least five Naxalites were killed on Saturday in an encounter in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, police said here.

Bastar division Inspector General (IG) A.N. Upadhya told PTI that the ultras had been killed in an encounter with the police in Gondmetta village under Bhairamgarh police station.

According to senior police officials, large quantity of arms and explosives were also recovered from the spot.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the district police force and Special Police Officers (SPOs) reached the village this morning to carry out a search operation when the Naxalites opened firing on them, he said.

Five Naxalites were killed in the return fire, Upadhya added.

Four of the five ultras were found wearing uniforms and three loaded rifles, a 12-bore rifle and several hand grenades were recovered from them, he said.

Upadhya said there was no information about casualties to security personnel
