RAYAGADA: Despite threats from Naxals not to organise Maitri Milans (friendly get-togethers), the district police went ahead with their programmes.

Two days after the threats were issued by the Naxals, the Rayagada police today successfully conducted one programme in the Naxal-infested Jangili village under Pippaliguda gram panchayat, 35 km from here.

More than a 1,000 people of Allubadi, Pippiliguda, Karubai, Miraballi, Dongolodi and Baising GPs participated in various events. They later interacted with SP Asish Kumar Singh and complained of problems they have been facing in getting pension, water supply, road connectivity and houses under Indira Awas Yojana.

A magic show by constable Pintoo Patnaik entertained the children and elders alike. Later, Singh addressed the gathering and promised the villagers that police would stand by them at all times.

A couple of days back Naxalite posters had appeared in Bissam Cuttack block advising police not to hold Maitri Milans. They also sought the release of two officials of an engineering college held on charges of aiding the Naxals besides the money seized from them.
