LOHARDAGA: At least three People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) activists were killed and several injured in an encounter with police on Sunday.
The encounter lasted for over two hours. It was executed by a special motorcycle squad, comprising 26 jawans on 13 motorcycles, at Chatakpur Hills under the Senha police station.

The police squad headed by officer in-charge Purnachandra Devgan recovered a double-barrel gun, a carbine, a countrymade pistol, 38 live and empty cartridges, Naxal literature and many other articles, including utensils.

Though the police are yet to establish the identity of the deceased, SP Subodh Prasad said that initial inquiries revealed their names as Prakash Oraon of Nagra, Fuldeo Oraon of Chatakpur and Basudeo Mahto of Korgo village.

The SP said that the police were on alert since Saturday night following information that Naxalites had entered the Senha police station area from Ghaghra in Gumla district.

"The police team rushed to Chatakpur Hills after receiving a tip-off that a group of Naxalites were camping there. On seeing the approaching policemen, the Naxalites, numbering about 35, opened fire on them under the leadership of their zonal commander Manoj Yadav. In retaliation, the police opened fire and gunned down three of them," Prasad said.

The SP said that some of the PLFI activists also received gunshot injuries. "Surendra, Ishwar and Budha, who exchanged fire with the police team, are noted criminals and main accused in the kidnapping case of a basic health worker, Satendra Nath Sahay. Apart from committing crime, the threesome at times accompany Manoj Yadav's group of PLFI," the SP added.
