1 policeman killed, 5 injured in Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh

RAIPUR: A policeman was killed and five of his colleagues injured today in a land mine blast and subsequent attack by Naxalites in Bijapur district
of Chhattisgarh.

The Naxals attacked the convoy of the Superintendent of Police Ankit Garg, when it was passing through the Bijapur valley, about five kilometres from the district headquarters, DIG Pawan Dev said.

A policemen, Nand Kishore Sori, died on the spot while five others including Special Police officer Mohan, injured seriously, Dev said, adding, the vehicles in the convoy was also damaged.

The injured policemen were rushed to Bijapur hospital and later taken to Jagdalpur district headquarters by helicopter.

"Garg, who was leading the convoy to Bhopalpatnam, escaped unhurt in the incident," Dev said.

The Naxalites, who attacked the convoy after the blast, however, fled as the Jawans took position and countered them, he said.

The voting for the Lok Sabha election in the state is scheduled for April 16 and elaborate security arrangement has been made in view of the poll boycott declared by the Naxals.
