Raipur: In a major attack, suspected naxalites killed nine Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in an encounter at Sukma in Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh on Friday.

Three naxalites, in uniform, were also killed. The CRPF party was on a search operation duty for elections.

According to Pawan Deo, DIG (Naxalite Intelligence), a huge cache of arms, including an AK-47 and two wireless sets, were recovered from the spot after the encounter that lasted well over three hours. This is the first time AK-series rifles have been seized from the naxalites.

The encounter began at 12.30 p.m., when a 50-plus CRPF party was attacked. Among those killed was Deputy Commandant Diwakar Tiwari, Mr. Deo said.

K. Srinivas Reddy reports from Hyderabad:

Police sources in Raipur said nearly 200 Maoists ambushed the CRPF contingent, which went to Chinta Guppa village in Dantewada district on information of the rebels holding a meeting.

As the CPRF team was encircled by the rebels, the contingent alerted the base station near Dornapal, about 45 km away, and reinforcements were rushed.

Even as the gun battle with the patrol team continued, a reinforcement team led by Tiwari was also ambushed. In addition to Tiwari, a sub-inspector, four havaldars and three constables were killed.
