Naxal menace: Maha Govt asks Centre for extra force

Mumbai , Apr 9 In the backdrop of recent spurt in Naxal attacks in Vidarbha region, Maharashtra Government today asked the Centre to deploy additional security personnel in the area.

"We request Chidambaram to send additional security personnel to help tackle the Naxal menace," Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said during a meeting to review security situation in the state in the backdrop of Lok sabha polls.

Pointing to Intelligence reports of a spurt in Naxal activities in Gadchiroli and Gondia districts, Chavan said a special action plan should be prepared to tackle the issue.

" Battalions would be sought from the Centre depending on the need and helicopters of the Army and Air Force should also be on stand by to meet any eventuality in Naxal areas,"he said.

Ministers of state for Home, Naseem Khan and Nitin Raut, and Additional Chief Secretary Chandra Iyengar attended the meeting.
