Seven IEDs found in Khunti ahead of polls

Khunti (Jharkhand) (PTI): Hours after the death of five CRPF personnel in Naxal attack, security forces recovered seven powerful Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) in Jharkhand's Khunti district on Sunday, barely five days ahead of the Parliamentary polls in the area and coinciding with the visit of Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

The inter-connected IEDs were planted near a canal on Salgadih-Baridih path in the district, Deputy Superintendent of Police A K Roy said.

While one IED weighed a massive 60 kg, the other six were of 20 kg each and all connected with a 200 metre wire, Mr. Roy said.

Suspected Naxalites had planted the explosives with an aim to target the security forces who are engaged in area domination ahead of the April 16 polls in khunti parliamentary constituency.

The explosive recovery came hours after one head constable and four constables of CRPF were killed and three others injured in an encounter with jawans of the 133rd battalion of the force during a search operation in the jungle in Adki police station area of Khunti. The Naxals took away an AK-47 and an INSAS rifle.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi visited the district headquarters for poll campaign later in the day.
