Colleagues pay tribute to slain sub-inspector

SAMBALPUR: Colleagues bade an emotional farewel to sub-inspector Narasingh Mahakud, who was killed in an encounter with Maoists at Sambalpur on
Monday. They carried his body to the Saheed statue in a procession on Tuesday and gave him a guard of honour. At his native Champamal village in Sonepur district, Mahakud was cremated.

"He was a brave officer and the department is proud of him. His death is a great loss to the department, but the blood he shed will not go waste," IG (northern range) Y B Khurania said.

Mahakud, who had been promoted to the rank of sub-inspector recently, was posted at BTM outpost in Jharsuguda district.

Senior police officers IG of Police Khurania, SP (Sambalpur) Sanjay Kumar and SP (Jharsuguda) Kabita Jalan paid tribute to the slain sub-inspector and consoled Mahakud's family members.

The department is trying to ensure that his family gets the salary that Mahakud till the time when his retirement was due and stay at the official quarter.

Mahakud's family will get Rs 8 lakh as compensation and an insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh. One family member will also get a job. "We know it is quite difficult to compensate for the loss, but we want to ensure that they live with dignity," Khurakia said.

Mahakud, son of police personnel Judhistir Mhakud, joined the department as a constable in 1973. He was promoted to ASI soon. He received the President's medal in 2008 for his service to the department and was promoted sub-inspector.
