Connectivity to 2000 villages by fiscal-end: Minister

BHUBANESWAR: Rural Development Minister Bikram Arukh said in the Assembly that 2000 unconnected villages will be covered under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) during the 2009-10 financial year.

Replying to a question from Ramesh Chandra Chau Patnaik of the BJD, the Minister said the Centre is yet to fix target on the length of road to be constructed under the scheme and the expenditure under it for the current financial year.

The Minister said the Centre had provided Rs 1251.38 crore for construction of roads under the scheme in 2008-09. Out of this, Rs 1163.01 crore has been spent during the year.

The highest expenditure of Rs 83.73 crore has been made in Balasore district followed by Rs 78.78 crore in Bargarh district.

The lowest expenditure of Rs 6.81 crore has been made in the Naxal-affected Malkangiri district. However, expenditure in Koraput district was Rs 65.48 crore while Rs 9.48 crore was spent in the riot affected Kandhamal district. Utilisation of funds was also low in Nayagarh district during the year as Rs 8.64 crore was spent under the scheme, he said.
