Elusive Naxal nabbed in New Delhi

CHENNAI: A naxal who had been eluding Tamil Nadu police for the last 22 years was finally arrested in New Delhi on Wednesday.

N K Gopal (59) of Nagaarasanpatti, Krishnagiri district, who was involved in two murder cases, has escaped from the Salem jail in 1987 and settled down in New Delhi along with his family. He worked as a private security guard in New Delhi.

Gopal was influenced by CPI (ML) ideology in 1973 and murdered Dharmalinga Chettiar in February 1973. The Salem court has sentenced him to death. But it was commuted to life sentence by the Madras High Court.

In the same year, he murdered Periyanna Chettiar of Salem and also injured a police inspector Sitaraman with a knife. The Salem court sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment. In 1987, the Salem jail sent him on a month’s parole. However, he didn’t return. Since then the Q-branch police have been searching for him.
