Explosion at police station

GUNTUR: A minor explosion in a police station in the city had cops on their toes on Saturday. A casual worker received minor burn injuries in the
incident.

The explosion left the police bosses shocked as it took place at the city police control room located right opposite the SP's office and a few yards from the residence of heavy industries minister Kanna Lakshminarayana.

Police officials including the station house officer had no idea as to how the explosive material reached the station. According to information, the explosion took place when two workers were relocating material, books, records and furniture belonging to the Nagarampalem police station to its new building. While the workers fled the scene, the staff at the women police station in the ground floor raised an alarm.

Suspecting that a naxal attack had taken place, police personnel from the Nagarampalem police station, located adjacent to the building where the blast took place, rushed to the spot and surrounded the building. Senior police officials also arrived soon.

One unexploded country-made bomb was recovered from the spot. The police suspect that there were two bombs seized from factionalists that were kept in the records room of which one exploded while the workers were shifting items. "We are investigating as to why the bombs were kept in the control room," said A V Ranganath, SP, administration. Nadikanti Ramu, the injured worker, was shifted to the government general hospital (GGH).
