Former Sarpanch gunned down by Naxals

Bijapur June 14: Maoists gunned down a former Sarpanch and critically injured a constable in two incidents in this district, police said today.

Bullet-ridden body of Poonam Hunga (45) was today found at Metapar locality of Basaguda area here. He was a BJP worker and also Cooperative Committee salesman.

Naxals had abducted Poonam and Janpad Panchayat Secretary Nageshwar eight days ago. Information about Nageshwar was being gathered. In another incident, constable Budhraj Bhaskar was attacked and seriously injured by the ultras donning villager's attire yesterday at Pamed area. He was admitted to the Chirla village hospital.

Due to Naxal-menace, panic gripped in the area and traffic movement was obstructed on Bijapur-Bhopalpattnam road which affected supply of essential commodities since eight days leading to a surge in their prices.
