IGP announces Rs 4 lakh reward for informers

Chikmagalur June 23: Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Gopal Hosur declared that the Rs 4 lakh reward will be given to those who help police in nabbing Naxals within 24 hours.

Speaking at a public contact programme at Shiralu Government Lower Primary School in Sringeri taluk on Saturday, he said that the department will take necessary steps for the future of those informers.

Superintendent of Police M N Nagaraj said that police will take stringent actions against those villagers who support Naxals. The department had never taken any innocents into custody, he added.

“Those who were arrested by the police had already confessed their offence. Naxals are exploiting the illiteracy of the villagers. Hiding a crime also is an offence under the law,” Nagaraj said.

Villager from Sheeralu Kempaiah pleaded police not to harass innocent villagers. He promised that the villagers will extend co-operation by not helping Naxals.

Another villager Ramugoudlu from Durgi village confessed that they had served food for naxals. “We will not render any help in future,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, Kempegowda, a resident of Menasinahadya requested authorities to distribute naxal packages properly by giving prominence to farmers.

Replying to villagers demands, Hosur said that the department will take people’s problems into considerations and try to find solutions to their problems. Koppa DySP Ahad Puthige, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K Sundar Naik, Chikmagalur Revenue Sub Division Officer Dayanand were present.
