KORAPUT: Maoists destroyed a nursery and a forest department building near Odiapentha village in Koraput district.

Hundreds of Red rebels raided the nursery early on Tuesday and ravaged saplings and the building. The rebels left posters which said the attack was in retaliation against the killing of two of their leaders in Andhra Pradesh in an encounter. The rebels alleged the encounter was fake, sources said.

On May 24, Andhra Pradesh police had gunned down two CPI (Maoist) leaders, including one allegedly involved in the assassination attempt on former Andhra chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. CPI (Maoist) central committee and central military commission member Patel Sudhakar Reddy, who had masterminded Naidu's assassination attempt in 2003 and state committee member K Venkataiah had died in a gun battle in Warangal district's Tadvai forests.

"It was one of the best nurseries with about 100,000 saplings. They have destroyed the nursery and the official building. By a rough estimate, the loss is worth Rs 500,000. The staff were not staying at the nursery during the night for fear of the Maoists," divisional forest officer (Koraput) Atish Kumar Behera said.

Traffic was paralysed between Laxmipur-Narayanpatna and Narayanpatna-Bandhugaon on Tuesday as the rebels felled trees to block the two connecting roads to Narayanpatna.

Three nurseries have been destroyed in Narayanpatna since May 2. Earlier, members of Chasi Muliya Adivasi Sangh (CMAS), a Maoist-backed organization, had destroyed two nurseries at Musulimunda and Ambaguda alleging the plantation work at the nursery was encroaching on tribal farmlands of tribals.
