DEOGARH: Fear of Naxal strike has resurfaced in the district with the banned outfit launching its campaign in a big way in interior pockets.

The Naxals are working hard to regroup and re-establish their base in the district which has seen seven Naxals killed in two separate encounters in Ranigula and Barkhol in 2006 and in Gandam in Tileibani block in August 2008 after being apprehended by the security forces.

Although the Naxals maintained low profile after the incidents, they are reportedly planning strikes in a big way with more than 100 Naxals, including women cadres, sighted in the interior pockets of Riamal, Laimura, Gandam, Telikusum, Budhikuten and Ranigula. The ultras have managed to raise peoples’ militia and garner the support of villagers who are deprived of basic facilities like health, drinking water, education and communication. Moreover, the inhospitable terrains and the underplaying of their presence by the police are helping them spread their tentacles. The Naxals are moving around villages and busy constituting kranti committees. They have reportedly held meetings in the villages of Hiran and Hitam in Tileibani block besides Hikapali across the border in Sambalpur district. Besides, their presence and activity has also been reported from Kansar and Sodo gram panchayats in Riamal block and in Laimura GP in Tileibani block.

The Naxals, including armed female cadres, said to be from Jharkhand have divided themselves into groups and fanned out to interior pockets regaining their lost base. The Maoists are laying more thrust on reorganising their cadres and strategy to strengthen their base rather than unleashing violence. District SP Surya Thangpa said since Deogarh district is Naxal-infested, movement of Naxals cannot be ruled out. But if conducting elections are a parameter which passed off peacefully, it is clear that the police have an upper hand. The activity of the Naxals is seasonal but if they are trying to re-establish themselves, the police too are doing their duty by undertaking combing operation to drive them out, she added.
