BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today said in the Assembly that shuffling of officers under political pressure is no longer possible under his dispensation.

Replying to an adjournment motion moved by the Congress members on the Naxalite attacks on three police stations in Koraput district, the Chief Minister said that efficient collectors and SPs are being posted in the Naxalite-affected districts.

Naveen said that before 2000, collectors and SPs of districts were changed on the whims and fancies of political leaders which is no longer possible now. “I will not go into what was done before 2000, it is a sordid past,” he said.

The Opposition alleged that posting of officers in the Naxalite-affected districts has now become a punishment for the officers and the police have lost their morale to fight against the Naxals.

The Chief Minister said manpower in 83 police stations in Naxalite-affected areas has been augmented.

Besides, 305 rural and 115 urban police stations have been covered under the fortification programme, he said, adding that 2,100 special police officers (SPOs) have been recruited to be deployed in five Naxalite-affected districts.
