Police apprehend Maoist attack, seek reinforcements

Midnapore (WB) (PTI): Apprehending a Maoist attack in this region of West Bengal, police today sought reinforcements from the state government in the wake of intelligence report about a Naxal team sneaking into the area from neighbouring Jharkhand.

The Maoist team had been responsible for the killing of 11 policemen at Chaibasa in West Singhbhum in Jharkhand on June 10, Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma said.

District Magistrate N S Nigam along with the SP, held a meeting this morning to review the situation in Lalgarh with political leaders of all parties.

The Trinamool Congress boycotted the meeting while the SUCI, its ally, staged a walk out in protest against the arrest of five members of Peoples's Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) from the troubled area.

Trouble had erupted in phases at Sijua in Salboni yesterday as CPI(M) activists tried to regain lost ground by attacking four PCPA activists in the area, police said.

The situation was compounded with the killing of a CPI(M) woman leader from Dharampur Salukha Soren on Thursday.

Her body was recovered on Friday, police said.
