Goaltore (WB), June 26 Security forces today launched a fresh offensive against the heavily-armed Maoists and exchanged fire with them in the Lalgarh area where the naxals detonated two landmines.

Five days after securing control of the key Lalgarh police station, central paramilitary forces and state police personnel began the operation at 0800 hrs from here, 20 km from Lalgarh.

As the troops pushed ahead, they encountered fire from a group of Maoists comprising about 15 men at Kadasole and replied with mortars, light machine guns and AK-47s.

The Maoists also triggered two landmine blasts in the area in a bid to stall the movement of security forces. No was injured in the explosions.

Two other landmines were defused by a CID Bomb Disposal Squad near a bridge four feet away from the road, near Kadasole.

IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said that the forces were taking control of forest areas and were sanitising the area between Pingboni and Ramgarh, a distance of 11-12 km.
