RANCHI: A day after Maoists ambushed two police teams in Jharkhand killing 10 policemen, they detonated a landmine near Rania in Khunti district,
about 80 km from Ranchi, on Saturday injuring 10 cops, five of them critically.

The incident, third in last four days, took place when the Jharkhand Armed Police personnel were returning to Rania police camp in a police van after purchasing diesel.

By the time the injured policemen took position, the rebels opened indiscriminate firing on them. The policemen also fired over 100 rounds and mortars. The fierce encounter lasted about half-an-hour following which the Naxalites retreated into the nearby jungles.

"The landmine was planted on a bridge. The vehicle, which carried diesel containers, was coming from Torpa to the Rania police camp," SDPO Ashok Kumar Rai said.
