RANCHI: Two days after the abduction of Congress leader Maheshwar Mahato from Sataki village under Bundu police station of the the district his body was recovered from Usida village.

Mahato's body had several injuries indicating physical torture and his throat was slit by a sharp-edged instrument. However, no posters were found indicating hwe was killed by Maoists. Villagers, however, suspect that Mahato was abducted by the Red rebels on his way home on Friday afternoon.

"We could not locate his whereabouts and some people said armed Maoists abducted him on Friday as they thought he was a police informer," said Kamlesh Mahato, a cousin of the deceased.

He said the Maoists had killed Mahato for no fault of his as he was not a police informer but a social worker who ran a grocery shop in the village.

SP (rural) Anup T Mathew said family members, who identified Mahato's body, were not saying anything possibly due to fear.

Meanwhile, on Sunday over 40 Maoists attacked a Jogibigha village on Jharkhand-Bihar border and seriously injured one Moinuddin Khan. Khan was rushed to Gaya Medical College where he is undergoing treatment.

SP Chatra Narendar Kumar Singh said the Maoists surrounded the village and pulled out Khan from his house and shot him in the leg.

According to sources, the Maoists attacked the village and shot at Khan who was luckily saved after the villagers retaliated with traditional weapons. No one else was injured as the Maoists retreated after the villagers retaliated, the sources said.
