Gidam blast death toll up to 6

K. Srinivas Reddy

Raipur: The death toll in Sunday’s landmine blast rose to six with police finding the body of a CRPF jawan and two injured succumbing to their injuries.

Ironically, the ambushed CRPF jawans were on their way in a truck from Gidam to attend a class in counter insurgency operations at a training school in Barsur, Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh. The team, which started around 2 p.m. from the base camp, obviously spent lot of time at a weekly shandy on way to Barsur, perhaps giving ample opportunity for Maoists to anticipate their movement and organise the blast.

Police officers said the blast was triggered by the Bhumkaal Militia members, who might have planted the mine long time ago. All they did was to connect the mine to a power source and blast the vehicle. There was no firing on the CRPF vehicle.
