Gunbattle near Lalgarh again

TNN 14 July 2009, 06:54am IST

LALGARH: A gunbattle started between the Maoists and security forces at Gohamichawk late on Monday. Till 10 pm, 50 rounds had been fired though

there was no report of any casualty. It is suspected that the Red ultras opened fire at the police camp.

The schools, meanwhile, continued to protest against the forces being housed on the campuses. Some 700 students and 300 guardians of Gohamichawk High School, 7 km from Lalgarh, staged a four-hour demonstration in front of the school from 8.30 am on Monday, demanding that the CRPF vacate the premises.

No classes have been held in the school since July 1, when CRPF jawans allegedly barged in after breaking the lock and set up camp there. The school's authority said they had received no prior intimation from the district administration that the premises would be taken over by CRPF.

Monday's agitation, in which Maoists and People's Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) leaders also participated, comes three days after a similar agitation was staged at Binpur High School with the same demand.

Camp in-charge S N Manna assured the agitators that they would vacate the school in a week. The demonstrators gave them only three days and threatened to re-launch the agitation unless they complied.
