Maoists attack police camp in Lalgarh

Lalgarh, WB (PTI): Maoists attacked a camp of joint forces at Dharampur, about 15 km from here, on Monday night despite presence of security personnel.

The ultras attacked the camp of the State police and para-military forces in West Midnapore district and fired about 20 rounds, IG Western rage, Kuldip Singh said.

Personnel from the force retaliated and the Maoists retreated after an exchange of fire for sometime, Mr. Singh said.

District Magistrate N.S. Nigam said no casualty has been reported from any side.

There had been speculation earlier that the Maoists had fled from Lalgah following the operation of the joint forces to flush out the ultras from the area.

Dharampur falls on one of the two routes from Midnapore to Lalgarh and used to be a Maoists-infested area.

Maoist leader Bikash had held an open press conference, the first in Lalgarh, in Dharampur where a BDO office had been torched earlier. The joint forces recaptured Dharampur on July one.

The Maoists killed two CPI(M) supporters and ransacked a CPI(M) party office at Sisri village, near Dharampur, on Friday night.
