No reason to worry about naxal threat to PM, Sonia: Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi were fully protected and there was

no reason to worry about any naxal threat to them.

"The Prime Minister and Mrs Sonia Gandhi are fully secured. Don't worry," Union home minister P Chidambaram said when asked about the threats reportedly given to the PM and the UPA chairperson by a Maoist leader in Jharkhand.

Nevertheless, sources said that the home ministry has advised the state government to take all precautionary measures in the wake of threat calls.

A Maoist leader in Jharkhand -- Anup Mukherjee -- has reportedly warned that his group could resort to LTTE-style attacks against Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh in the wake of the offensive against naxals.

The PM and the Congress president might meet the same fate as Rajiv Gandhi had met at the hands of the LTTE, said a press release issued in Garwah district by Jharkhand State Central Committee member-cum-Ghatsilla Sub-Zonal Commander `Anupji' (Anup Mukherji of West Bengal).

A threat has also been issued against Chidambaram, the release said and asked all Congress legislators, both in Parliament and the assembly, to quit within a week or face "death warrants".
