Maoists ‘death sentence’ for

;Press Trust of India
Bhubaneswar, 17 Aug: Furious over killing, arrest and surrender of their members in Orissa's Rayagada district, the CPI(Maoist) has pronounced “death sentence” for the Superintendent of Police (SP) and two other policemen engaged in anti-naxal operations, official sources said today.
A seven-page letter signed by Mr Azad ~ self-appointed secretary of Bansadhara Divisional Committee (BDC) ~ sent to the local Press Club last night, accused district SP Asish Kumar Singh of launching a campaign against Maoists by staging “fake” surrenders.
Confirming receipt of the letter from the Maoists, the DIG, south-western range, Mr Sanjeev Panda said that the ultras resorted to the move as they were frustrated.
“The letter is an indication of the weakening of their organisation in the area,” the DIG told PTI over telephone, claiming that at least seven Maoist cadres surrendered and 30 of them were arrested by the police in Rayagada in the last three months.
The killing of three armed women cadre in an encounter with security personnel last week in Rayagada was also a blow to the outfit, a senior police official said.
“The SP is held responsbile for making false claims that certain Maoists surrendered before police,” the letter said, adding that innocent people were being harassed by police on the pretext of linkage with red rebels.
