MIDNAPORE: Unidentified miscreants gunned down a 24-year-old DYFI leader, Mangal Soren, at Ergoda in West Midnapore's Binpur on Friday. Mangal was
working in a paddy field when three persons arrived on a motorcycle and fled after shooting him.

CPM leaders alleged that political rivals killed Soren to create tension in the area before the managing committee election at Dharsa High School.

Managing committee elections were scheduled to be held in Dharsa High School, Balichua High School and Murari SC High School on Sunday. However, sources said adequate security had not been provided to the candidates despite the threat perception.

Meanwhile, the Maoist-backed PCPA organized a rally at Madhupur in Salboni on Friday to further press the demand for withdrawal of joint forces. In a related development, members of the CPM and police-backed Gana Pratirodh Committee (GPC) switched over to PCPA at a rally in Gajgiri, Belpahari, on Thursday night.

Kargil Singh, one of the defectors, said: "We had been compelled to join GPC as some armed men had threatened us with firearms."

A police officer, however, said: "We think the locals are scared as Maoists have already killed GPC leaders Shankar Tudu, Sudhir Mandi, Karan Murmu, Guru Charan Tudu and Lal Murmu."
