KOLKATA: A local leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a businessman were killed by suspected Maoists in the Lalgarh region of West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district.
Karuna Mahato, the Sarpanch of the Gram Panchayat at Salboni, was abducted from his home and was missing for two days.
His body was found early on Saturday morning near Jhargram, Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma.
In a separate incident, the bullet-riddled body of Bomkesh Giri, a local businessman, was found in Bhimpur.
Bandh peaceful
Meanwhile, a 12-hour bandh called on Saturday, by the district committee of the CPI (M) in neighbouring Purulia district passed off peacefully. The bandh was called to demand strict and immediate action against those responsible for the killing on November 26, of Subimal Mahato, a school teacher.
