Elite Greyhounds take on Maoists in AP

Andhra Pradesh's elite security force the Greyhounds have been engaged in an encounter with Maoists since Wednesday night (December 2).

Over 40 Maoists are said to be involved in the encounter in Asifabad forests in the Adilabad district. According to sources the Maoists are moving in a large group in the heavily forested areas adjoining Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Three Maoists were last reported gunned down in the encounter this morning, and till then lasted for nearly 12 hours.

Police suspect that one of the slain was Bhaskar, secretary of the Adilabad district committee of the Maoists.

Sources say that they have had a hand in killing over 60 police personnel in Gadchiroli district alone.

The operation to flush out the Maoists is expected to last for well over a week.
