Hazaribag: Security forces on Wednesday recovered a landmine planted beneath a culvert at Zarzari village under the Bishnugarh police station of the district.

Briefing the media, deputy commissioner-cum district returning officer Vinay Kumar Choubey said that security personnel recovered the landmine weighing 50 kg while patrolling the Bishnugarh-Gomia road.

The DC said that the security personnel, who were patrolling the area on foot, heard the sound of an explosion and saw smoke billowing out of the culvert. Sensing danger, they conducted a thorough search of the culvert and found the landmine lying underneath it. A bomb squad, which accompanied the security forces, immediately deactivated the landmine, he added.

Choubey said that the security forces also recovered a pair of shoes and slippers from the spot which the Maoists had probably left behind after planting the landmine. "A major mishap seems to have been averted as polling personnel were supposed to return from the same route along with electronic voting machines (EVMs) after the commencement of polls," he added.

The DC said that an alert was sounded soon after the incident. He said that polling personnel and security forces, who were supposed to cross the Maoist-hit areas under the Bishnugarh police station of the district, were advised to move on foot as a precautionary measure. The police have launched a massive combing operation in the area, he added.
