UNFAZED by the new-found bonhomie between the police and tribals, a group of Maoists exploded the Ralhatu Gram Panchayat (GP) office, close to Jharkhand border, in Bonai sub-division of Sundargarh district last night.

The blasts are being seen as a desperate attempt by the Maoists to prove their striking ability with or without the support of the locals.

About 40 Maoists blew up the Gram Panchayat office by triggering three consecutive explosions. Security forces were camping at B Jharbera area, 6 km away, when the blasts took place. The Maoists took away rice bags from the GP office and put up posters asking people not to support the police, before fleeing.

Senior policemen rushed to the spot. Rourkela SP Diptesh Patnaik said the incident would further alienate the tribals from the Maoists, adding that security has been beefed up.

Maoists seem to be losing ground in Relhatu Gram Panchayat under K Balang police limits after tribals from several villages have come out openly in support of police action against the radicals.
