RAYAGADA: A hardcore Maoist was arrested in Rayagada district and five landmines and an equal number of guns besides a large quantity of explosives were recovered from him. On a tip-off, Purna, an explosives expert and a master in making landmines, was nabbed from Tubuni village in Gudari police station area last night.

Ammunition, including gelatines and 15 kg of splinters used in the making of landmines, were seized. Purna was coordinating ultras’ movement in Rayagada district and criminal cases were pending against him at different police stations. Purna also confessed to have been involved in the attack on Nayagarh armoury in 2008. Rayagada SP Anup Krishna told mediapersons that Purna, a militia member, was involved in a number of cases, including the murder of a goldsmith in 2004, blasting a landmine targeting a police party at Dhepaguda ME School in 2007 and another landmine attack on police.

Meanwhile, A Ravikrishna, ASP from neighbouring Parvatipuram in Andhra Pradesh, who was present at the Press meet, asked Maoists to respond to the call to join the mainstream.
Under the Amma Pilupu programme, women cadres who surrender would be rehabilitated, he said.
The Andhra Pradesh Government has adopted a five-point programme to welcome the Maoists who shun violence.
