PhD holder from JNU among 8 naxalites arrested in UP

Lucknow, Feb 8 (PTI) An associate of arrested naxal leader Kobad Ghandy and a PhD holder from the JNU were among eight Maoists taken into custody by the Uttar Pradesh police from Kanpur today.

"Eight members of banned CPI (Maoists) were arrested from different places in Kanpur city during raids by UP STF this morning," Director General of Police Karamveer Singh told reporters here.

Two of them were top leaders of the banned group. Balraj alias Arvind is member of CPI (Maoist) central committee and polit bureau and its secretary, northern regional committee.

He was an associate of top maoist leader Kobad Ghandy, who was arrested from New Delhi in last September.

"Ghandy had mentioned Balraj's name during interrogation," Singh said.

Another red rebel identified as Chintan alias Banshidhar Singh, has a PhD and M Phil from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
