Red rebel held in Rayagada district

KORAPUT: Police in Rayagada district arrested a hardcore Maoist and recovered a huge cache of arms and explosives from him on Tuesday night.

Acting on a tip-off, Ramesh Mambalika alias Purna was arrested from his village Tubuni within Gudari police limits.

"We had specific information regarding Purna's movement and had chalked out a strategy to nab him at his village. We have recovered five landmines and an equal number of double barrel guns from his possession. We have also recovered 15 kilogrms of splinters which are used in making landmines," superintendent of police (Rayagada) Anoop Krishna said.

According to the superintendent of police, "Purna was expert in making landmines and was coordinating the Maoist movement in the district. For the last five years, he was in the armed squad of the Bansadhara division of the outlawed CPI (Maoist)."

Going with the interrogation of the arrested Maoist, police said Purna have as many as six rebel violence cases pending against his name at different police stations in the district.

"He has confessed to his involvement in the killing of two civilians at Dhepaguda area. The Maoist has also confessed to have been directly involved in the Nayagarh district armoury attack which took place in 2007," the superintendent of police said.
