Condemning against torturing innocent people in the name of Anti-Naxal operation, the Supreme Court on Monday, Feb 22, directed the Center to be just in its operation. The apex court made the statement while hearing the petition on the killing of over 10 tribals of Gompad village in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district allegedly by security personnel for reportedly acting as Naxal sympathisers.

"Should everything ordered in the name of operations? Is there no concern for human or Fundamental Rights? We want to know why such incidents took place and how the security forces conducted themselves," a two-member bench of Justices B Sudershan Reddy and SS Nijjar observed.

"If someone is fighting or sympathising with Naxals so what? First you say that operations are conducted against Naxals, then Naxal sympathisers and then sympathisers of such sympathisers. What is all this?" the court asked while hearing a petition on killing of over 10 tribals in Chhattisgarh.
During the hearing the Centre told the apex court that it has envisaged a Rs. 7,300 crore package for the development of Naxal-affected States in the country.

Attorney General G E Vahanvati, who cited the Center's approval to the package, submitted it before a bench of Justices Reddy and S Nijjar.

The attorney general added that the government was anticipating Moaists interference in the implementation of the scheme as similar disturbances were witnessed in the earlier schemes.

He said that the details of the package in the form of an affidavit will be presented by the government before the apex court.
