Former Maoist MLA offers seat to Soren

Ranchi : The lone MLA in Jharkhand to have Maoist links is likely to make way so that Chief Minister Shibu Soren can get elected to the Assembly in time to retain his seat.
JMM MLA Polus Surin sent a letter to Assembly Speaker C P Singh on Wednesday, seeking to quit his Torpa reserved constituency. While the JMM had fielded five candidates with Maoist links in the Assembly elections, Surin was the only one to get elected.

The JMM has always toed a soft line on the Maoists, with the Soren government accused of being reluctant to join the crackdown against Naxals. During the elections, this soft line is believed to have won him many tribal votes.

Naxal sympathisers see the offer by Surin — who is in jail facing half a dozen cases of murder, loot, illegal possession of weapons and ransom, and who won the Assembly elections from behind bars — to quit for Soren as a sign of the JMM leader’s hypocrisy and desperation to retain power.

“In the past we always felt that Guruji (Soren), who had given party tickets to five Naxalites, was pro-Maoist. He has proved he is selfish to the core,” a Maoist activist, who did not want to be named, said.

Soren’s deadline to get elected to the Assembly within six months of taking over as the Chief Minister ends on June 30. Despite his best efforts, none of the JMM’s 18 MLAs has vacated their seats to make way for Soren. They include his son Hemant, who had earlier promised to vacate Dumka, and his daughter-in-law Sita, whose seat Jama was considered safe.

Even Vishnu Bhaiya and Mathura Prasad Mahato had gone back on their word to vacate their Jamtara and Tundi seats, respectively.

According to sources, Sita drove a hard bargain as exchange for Jama. The widow of Soren’s late son Durga reportedly sought entitlement over property belonging to her husband, a Rajya Sabha seat for her father and the post of chairman of a state-run board or corporation. “I am ready to vacate the seat. To do so, one has to have a seat. The CM has to ensure where I will sit. If only he offers me, then I will quit,” Sita said openly.

Soren then came up with the option of Hemant replacing him as CM, if he didn’t manage to get elected as an MLA. This way, Soren could have retained power in the state by proxy while keeping his Lok Sabha seat, as well as avoid the heat and dust of a bypoll. However, JMM allies BJP and the All Jharkhand Students’ Union refused to play ball.

The opposition Congress and its ally Jharkhand Vikas Morcha president Babulal Marandi had also said they would oppose any such move. “In case Shibu Soren mobilises the BJP and appoints Hemant as CM, the people of this state will launch a massive agitation,” said Marandi.

IT SHOWS THAT SOREN IS HAVING SOME "SOFT" RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE OUTLAWS.
IT IS SO SAD TO SEE THAT SOREN IS NOT COOPERATING WITH CHIDAMBARAM'S PLAN. HE IS A FRIGHTENED MAN.IN THIS WAY THE DISEASE WILL ONLY EXPAND.

SHAME ! SHAME ! ON SOREN
