Lucknow : To counter Maoists, Uttar Pradesh will spend Rs 300 crore to ensure “comprehensive development” in Naxal-hit districts. The money will be used to provide better roads, drinking water, houses, sanitation, electrification and land to the landless in 731 villages in Chandauli, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Azamgarh, Ghazipur, Mau, Ballia, Deoria and Kushinagar districts.

All the villages will be developed at par with the Ambedkar Villages in terms of infrastructure. The state government has already approved projects worth Rs 330 crore to be undertaken in these villages.

“The districts had submitted their Detailed Project Reports last November, giving details as to where the gaps in services are. We have approved 138 mini ICDS Anganwadi centres in villages with less population, where we are covering not just children but also adolescent girls and pregnant women,” said Principal Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Prem Narain. “We have also prepared a list of elderly people and widows who are poor and can be covered under pension schemes. They will start getting pension from June.”

The money will be spent by the state’s Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Revenue, Rural Electrification, Women and Child Welfare, Food and Civil Supplies, Child Development and Nutrition and Social Welfare departments. Dr Ambedkar Gram Sabha Vikas Department will be the nodal department for monitoring the infrastructure related projects and Social Welfare Department will manage all welfare programmes.

The Anganwadi centres will start functioning by April-end, Narain said, adding the District Project Offices “have already been asked to prepare a list of malnourished children.”

Besides, the government will build toilets under the Total Sanitation Campaign , roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna, drinking water facilities under the Rural Drinking Water Mission. The villages will be electrified under the Rural Electrification Programme and solar lanterns will be given to them as part of the Ambedkar Gram Vikas Yojna.
