HYDERABAD: One home guard was killed and a head constable seriously injured in a blast at the Police Commissioner’s task force office in the heart of the city’s business district in Begumpet.

An unidentified youth left a packet containing a gelatin stick at the entrance to the task force office located right next to a busy shopping mall.

It is also close to the residences of senior IPS and IAS officers and a stone's throw from the chief minister’s camp office in Begumpet.

The home guard died on the spot while the head constable is fighting for his life at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, a police spokesman said.

While police officials did not rule out a naxal hand in it, the blast comes close on the heels an alert sounded out by the US Embassy in New Delhi warning American citizens and establishments in Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai against possible terrorist attacks.

However, a police officer ruled out any connection to the US alert and said it was difficult to pinpoint the responsible groups or individuals for the blast unless investigations were complete.

Security was tightened in the city after the blast.
