MANGALORE: The state government has sought the permission of the Centre to ban Naxals, carrying out their activities in the state under the Maoist banner.

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, chief minister Dharam Singh pointed out that the Naxals in the state were not supported by CPI or CPM.

"They are carrying out their activities under the Maoist banner," he said. Observing that the National Park was the source of the problem, Singh said the state Government has urged the Centre to amend the Forest Act with a view to enabling it to take up developmental works in the national parks, to contain the Naxalite menace.

"The amendment is being done and state will be empowered to carry out development in forest areas," he said. He said about 2,000 tribal families were apprehensive of eviction and Naxals were using this insecurity against the state.
