Incidents of stone pelting and alleged extremists' acts marred the festive mood of Durga puja celebrations at many places in Jharkhand.

Police said CPI(Maoist) rebels beat up more than 10 artistes, including women, and spectators at a cultural programme organised by a local Durga puja samiti AT Pahra village IN Hazaribagh district last night.

Armed extremists also cut off the hair of two female dancers as 'punishment' and warned them not to dance at the puja. The dancers have lodged an FIR against sub-zonal 'commander' of the CPI(Maoist) and his 20 accomplices.

In another incident, immersion of idols was halted and the main bazar road blocked for about three hours in Simdega district headquarters town last night when some men pelted stones at the procession. The protesters were shouting anti-administration slogans for not providing them adequate security.

However, after assurance of strict action against the culprits by the deputy commissioner, the idols were immersed.

Some men also went on a rampage in a pandal at the crowded Bakari bazar area of the capital city. They allegedly beat up some members of the organising committee.

The darshan of idols was halted for about an hour in yet another pandal in the city following scuffle by miscreants with one of the organisers.
