HOSUR: The Naxal Special Division Wing (NSDW) police started a physical fitness training programme for youths in Dharmapuri district on Thursday to help them take part in the Defence selection test.

Superintendent of Police H Jayaram inaugurated the training camp at a formal function in the District Sports Stadium in Dharmapuri.

The Tamil Nadu government has been implementing the Socio-Economic Development Scheme involving Rs 5.5 crore funds in more than 40 Naxalite-infested villages in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. The scheme is to prevent the youths from leaning towards militant outfits in the backward region.

As a part of the programme, NSDW, in association with the district police, has been offering different types of training to youths to maintain their physical fitness and gain jobs in the Army, Air Force and Navy.

NSDW has announced that the physical fitness training programme would be conducted from October 13 to 17 in government high schools in Pennagaram and Harur as well as the District Sports Stadium in Dharmapuri.

More than 150 youths from various parts of the district took in the training programme. ‘‘The current training is to help the youths participate in the Defence selection test to be conducted from October 19 to 24 in Erode,’’ SP H Jayaram said.

He appealed to youths in the district to utilise the programme and gain jobs in the Defence services. In addition to training for physical fitness, he said the district police would also arrange training programmes to aid youths in taking the written test.

NSDW Inspector R Senthil and District Sports Officer Kiruba are offering various training to the youths in Dharmapuri district.
