Naxal teams on prowl; police on high alert

RAJAHMUNDRY: The district police are on a high alert following credible information that three action teams of the banned CPI-ML (Maoists) are on the prowl in East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts.

According to intelligence sources, the action teams, comprising two or three hardcore ultras who are experts in conducting recce and accomplishing specialised tasks, could attack soft targets to create terror and bring pressure on the YS Rajasekhara Reddy government to re-start the peace talks with the ultras.

The action teams could attempt to target politicos in East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts, the sources revealed.

The reports assume significance in view of the recent threats hurled at several political leaders including Roads and Buildings Minister Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao and Commercial Taxes Minister Konatala Ramakrishna. Significantly, both the ministers have chosen to ignore the threats.

The police have reviewed the VIP security in both the districts and have intensified anti-Naxal operations in the Agency areas of both the districts.

However, the police sources said that the Maoists have suffered a serious a jolt in the region in view of the surrender of key leaders including Komali Seshagiri Rao and Vikram.

They said the spate of surrenders, mainly due to the deft strategy of counselling kin of the Naxal leaders, has yielded good results.
