CHANDRAPUR: In a setback to the police department, the district and sessions court on Thursday granted bail to three suspected Naxals, lodged in Amravati jail for last eight months. The bail pleas of five other accused were, however, rejected.

The suspects — Raman Punekar, Shaktikumar Dadmalwar and Kishor Warwade — are likely to be released from jail on Saturday after all the bail formalities are completed, sources said.

Chandrapur police, led by SDPO Parag Manere, had busted the gang under the guidance of SP Cherring Dorje. The cops had first picked up Manoj Sonule, main source of naxalites in Chandrapur.

He was arrested with a Chinese-make carbine and more than 130 cartridges. Manere then started the mopping up operations in which eight more suspects were arrested after a thorough interrogation of the activists attached to Deshbhakti Yuva Manch (DYM)), a frontal organisation of Naxalites in the district.

Police had recovered Naxal literature and printing machinery during the operation. However, after a month, one of the accused Vinayak Sonule, who had given shelter to Manoj at his home, was released from jail for lack of evidence. The police withdrew all the charges against him.

A total of 10 accused were charged in this case, including Arun Pariera, the mastermind behind the nexus, Manoj Sonule, Arun Bhelke, convenor of DYM, Kanchan Bhelke-Nannaware, Ravindra Kurwatkar, Sudershan Ramteke, Gajanan Ankatwar, Raman Punekar, Shaktikumar Dadmalwar and Kishor Warwade.
