Fresh battalion for Dantewada

Lucknow : The 62nd Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force, which lost 76 men in the Naxal attack in Dantewada last week, is set to be replaced by another battalion for anti-Naxal operations in the area.

The CRPF Headquarters are in the process of identifyingthe battalion that will take its place.

The CRPF Central Sector Headquarters in Lucknow, under which the 62nd Battalion comes, however appears unaware of the decision.

Sector IG BK Sharma said: “We look after the administration related matters of the battalions, including the 62nd. The decision to move battalions is taken at the CRPF headquarters.”

“We are presently trying to settle the dues and compensation to the family members of the martyred personnel,” Sharma added.

A senior CRPF officer said moving out the 62nd Battalion has become necessary as it had lost almost an entire company.

The battalion needs to make up for its losses by inducting fresh manpower, including a deputy commandant, an assistant commandant, and six sub-inspectors.

The officer said the battalion will be attached to the group centre at Rampur till the required manpower is arranged. It will leave Dantewada after a replacement battalion reaches and takes charge, he added.

Satbir Singh, the CRPF Deputy Commandant at the Central Sector, said one of the critically injured constables, Aditya of Jadil area of Bulandshahr, has been referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, for treatment. The constable had suffered injuries in his eyes in the Naxal attack.
