BHADRACHALAM: Revolutionary writer Varavara Rao said Maoists in the country were fighting only for protection of rights and properties of locals, Adivasis and tribals.

Speaking at a meeting here today, he said there was no selfish motto behind their operations.

He flayed the Central Government for harassing tribals in the name of Green Hunt and alleged that the Government was acting at the behest of multinational companies.
``For several decades, the Maoists have been protecting tribal rights and properties in Agency areas across the country which are rich source of valuable minerals and several types of ores,'' he said.

``In a bid to handover these assets to multi national companies at the cost of tribals, the Centre launched operation `Green Hunt' in the name of `Maoists' and started harassing the locals," he alleged.

On the occasion, Varavara Rao said he would always be ready to support tribal rights and announced that he would extend his support for `Java, Jungle and Jameen' campaign launched by adivasis in the country.

Former SC, ST Commission chairman BD Sharma alleged that the tribals and police had become pawns in the hands of Central Government whose lives are at stake due to operation `Green Hunt'.
